SOUTHAMPTON CITY COUNCIL

Resin Bound Surface
Southampton City Council required a SUDs compliant surface that increased the profile of Southampton City Centre

Southampton City Council wanted a hard-wearing slip-resistant surface in an area that is central to tourism in the city – Kingsbridge Lane which is a link between Southampton Central train station and the prestigious Guildhall and Civic Centre.

THE CHALLENGE

The Kingsbridge area receives constant bicycle traffic and is a key cut through for pedestrians visiting the city. The lane needed an uplift in appearance, and it needed to have good Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs) credentials to avoid puddles or flooding in extreme weather. Kingsbridge Lane is one of the first areas visitors see when arriving into Southampton by train and therefore a key area for regeneration.

PROJECT GOALS

  • To create an impressive hardwearing slip-resistant surface
  • A permeable surface that is SUDs compliant
  • A quick to apply system that reduces disruption for the general public
  • Surfacing to complement the engraved granite blocks

THE REQUIREMENTS

Both the client and landscape architect decided that DekorGrip Resin Bound surfacing would be the best and preferred surface for the application. Unlike other surfacing solutions, DekorGrip Resin Bound combined being both beautiful and hardwearing.  The surface is suitable for pedestrian and traffic requirements and it was essential that it provided a look that complimented the surroundings,  especially the granite blocks which are an integral part of the design with their engraved quotes and facts associated with Southampton.

THE SOLUTION

Southampton City Council and their contractor, Balfour Beatty chose DekorGrip’s BBA approved Resin Bound system. Southampton worked closely with external contractors to deliver a surface that was functional, BBA certified and aesthetically pleasing.

With DekorGrip’s Resin Bound system chosen, the DekorGrip team worked with Southampton City Council to find a blend suited to the area and gave guidance on blends and provided sample blend swatches (request your sample here).

Southampton chose a Pearl Grey aggregate blend and Meon gave guidance and support throughout the project to overcome any challenges and ensure the contractor could deliver a great surface with minimal disruption to traffic and walkway users.
